Yes. You heard right. HOMEMADE NUTELLA.
“Can’t you believe it!?” says a certain 4-year-old telling her dad she made Nutella after school.
I knew I had to share this with you (and a certain chica in Italia who will also love this recipe).
As it turns out….if you take raw hazelnuts and combine them with some powdered sugar, cocoa, peanut oil & a dash of vanilla…you get Hazelnut Heaven on Earth (commonly known by its most famous registered trademark: Nutella)
I genuinely loved the process of making this. Everything about it was wonderful. Maybe it was the twinkle in my little girl’s eye. Or perhaps the sounds, and smells, and textures that filled our kitchen yesterday afternoon. Whatever it was – it was magic.
The photos tell the story pretty well…
Find the recipe here. The instructions are great. We made the “easy” version.
Some note-worthy notes:
* Please (oh pretty please) make sure you find raw, unsalted, untoasted, uneverything hazelnuts. We did a taste test (between preroasted and home-toasted) and there was NO comparison. The home-toasted hazelnuts were ever so much (eversomucheversomuch) better. We bought ours from the bulk bins in Whole Foods (~$4).
* You can use any old vegetable oil, but an unrefined nut oil is also worth the search/flavor/effort. We used an unrefined peanut oil (also from Whole Foods, ~$3)
* Once your Nutella is finished, I would (seriously) recommend taking a moment to make/savour this… (vanilla ice-cream, banana slices and a warm dollop of that fantastic, gooey goodness).
So jealous that your Whole Foods has hazelnuts for $4! I think it’s $7/lb in NY. I actually went to Whole Foods today to pick up hazelnuts for this spread, and they had every nut BUT bazelnuts in the bulk bins.
Hi Jessica,
No need to be jealous — MY Whole Food hazelnuts cost $8/lb! I actually had 1/2cup at home, so bought just over half a pound (which came to about $4.50).
Thanks so much for this crazy-good recipe. It was a joy to make and (an even bigger) joy to eat!
Fantastic! Made me think I could (should?) make our own almond butter too!
That looks amazing!
Oh yes, you should! I was shocked by how easy the “nut butter” process was! The link I include actually mentions how to make easy almond butter.
